Welcome to the AFS “Butch Peters” Library

The AFS “Butch Peters” Library is a valuable asset of the Society and its membership, and its operation is subsidized by the dues of membership.  In order to maximize its value to the membership, the Board of Directors of the American Foundry Society have voted to base article pricing on membership level.

Information for the MetalCasting Professional

Information is a key element in designing, fabricating, marketing and using metal castings. In the global market place, there are rapid changes in technology, markets, government regulations, environmental developments and safety issues. Current information is published in a wide variety of technical journals, trade publications and magazines. These same publications contain a wealth of historical information, which is still pertinent to the technical and marketing challenges facing the metalcasting community. Given the amount of information that is published monthly and is archived in past publications, how can the metalcasting professional find the critical information he needs in a rapid and cost-effective manner? The American Foundry Society “Butch Peters” Library is such a tool.

The AFS Abstract Data Base

The AFS Library Service offers the metal casting professional (designer, user, supplier, manufacturer, academia, etc.) a real-time, precision tool to locate both current and historical information necessary for their technical, production and marketing decisions. The AFS abstract data base currently contains more than 35,000 article citations going back to 1896 covering more than 100 journals and all pertinent books. The reviewed publications include technical and academic journals, trade magazines and manufacturing/business publications. The Society abstracts from more than sixty periodicals. Both U.S. and foreign sources are included, and the data base is updated monthly by experienced professionals who review and write focused, detailed abstracts on the key articles and publications. The abstracts cover a wide range of topics, including:

  • Casting processes
  • Cleaning and finishing
  • Energy conservation
  • Environmental control
  • General interest
  • Management
  • Melting
  • Molding and Coremaking
  • Ferrous and Nonferrous alloys
  • Plant engineering
  • Quality control
  • Safety & health
  • Sand technology
  • Metallurgy

The development and maintenance of this abstract data base system is supported in part by the Defense Logistics Agency through the American Metalcasting Consortium.

The AFS Library Search Engine

The AFS Library Search engine is powered by “ Google “ and has a full-text search capability for many articles in the library. You are not limited to a key word list that a reviewer may have assigned to a specific article. You select one or more key words and the search engine pulls up the abstracts that contain the key words anywhere in the document in the title, the journal name, the author list or the abstract text itself. In other articles, there is a search limit to the title, the journal name, the author list, or the abstract text itself. This provides you a powerful tool to rapidly focus your search on the key abstracts that you need.

Search Tips

AFS’ abstract database is powered by Google.  Here are a few tips to ensure successful search results:

§         Google searches are not case sensitive.

§         There is no need to include “and” between terms.

§         The order in which the terms are typed will affect the search results.

§         To restrict a search further, just include more terms.  For example, to locate information on aluminum melt quality, simply type aluminum degassing.

§         Google ignores common words and characters such as “where” and “how”.  If a common word is essential to getting the desired results, you can include it by putting a “+” sign in front of it.

§         To conduct a phrase search, simply put quotation marks around two or more words.  For example, to search for aluminum and melt cleanliness, type aluminum “melt cleanliness”.

§         Google will search not only for your search terms, but also for words that are similar to some or all of those terms.  If you search for melt cleanliness, Google will also search for melt clean, and other variations of your terms.

§         If your search results need to be narrowed further, you can focus your search by putting a minus sign (“-“) in front of words you would like to exclude from your search results.  For example, aluminum –cleanliness will return results that do not include cleanliness.
